Hood River Pickleball
Hood River has a lively year round pickleball scene that matches the Gorge's broader outdoor culture. Free public courts at Golden Eagle Park handle casual games, Hood River Athletic Club provides leveled open play and coaching, and Paddle Point offers bookable private court time and lessons.
Wind and changing weather shape the local routine. Outdoor players use the calm parts of the day, while the private clubs supply predictable sessions. Gorge Pickleball Association connects players across Hood River, White Salmon, and nearby communities through weekly play, round robins, and social events.
Where to play
Golden Eagle Park
Golden Eagle Park, 1220 Indian Creek Road, has three dedicated pickleball courts plus two shared courts. Public use is free from sunrise to sunset and generally first come, first served. When players are waiting, the current group has 30 minutes to finish.
The park has restrooms, parking, picnic shelters, and direct access to Indian Creek Trail. Tennis and basketball take daytime priority on the shared courts, so the three dedicated courts are the dependable choice. Gorge Pickleball Association members also receive access to loaner equipment kept for play at the park.
Hood River Athletic Club
Hood River Athletic Club, 1330 Brookside Drive, runs leveled open play Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to noon, and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon. Players self rate and place paddles at the court matching their level. The rotation changes from two players off to four players off as the waiting line grows.
Paddle Point
Paddle Point Pickle is the local book ahead option. Members and visitors can reserve a court, buy passes, or schedule instruction. It suits a foursome that wants a guaranteed time and a solo player who prefers a clinic over waiting for an outdoor game to form.
Pickleball lessons
Paddle Point runs Pickle 101 for beginners. A four to six player lesson costs $35 per member or $40 per visitor, while a two to three player lesson costs $50 per member or $60 per visitor. Kevin Beeson teaches the program and holds IPTPA and IFP professional credentials.
Hood River Athletic Club has three authorized professionals. Shaun Anderson offers private or semi private sessions at $64 per hour, while Carly Laws and Mike Wagner charge $60 per hour. The club also runs a Monday mixed drill, a Wednesday women's 3.5 and above drill, a Wednesday masters session for players 65 and older, and a Saturday 3.5 and above Dawn Patrol drill.
Pickleball events
Gorge Pickleball Association holds member round robins and summer barbecues on the third Sunday of each month. Annual membership is $25 and also includes early notice for play sessions and lessons, weekly schedules at May Street School and Hood River Armory, and access to other members for arranging games.
The Athletic Club adds four leveled open play blocks each week, plus focused drills for mixed players, women at 3.5 and above, masters, and stronger early morning players. Together, the association and club calendars cover social play, instruction, and more competitive rotations without forcing every player into the same session.
Visitors
Golden Eagle Park is the easiest free stop for travelers with partners. Permanent courts, restrooms, parking, and sunrise to sunset access make it simple to fit a game around hiking, biking, or time on the river. The 30 minute rule keeps turnover moving when all three dedicated courts are occupied.
Solo visitors have better odds at Hood River Athletic Club's leveled open play, where the paddle queue creates partners and games. Guest fees apply. Paddle Point is the more predictable choice for a private group because court reservations and visitor lessons are built into its program. On windy days, either private club is a steadier bet than waiting outside.
